Midland Public Schools, J.E. Johnson join forces to create skilled labor

The current high demand for skilled welders sent J.E. Johnson on a search for a training facility that would allow them to teach specific welding skills needed by the company. The Midland High School welding lab was an ideal location, and after several talks, J.E. Johnson and MPS agreed to initiate the pilot program. Two months into the program, both groups report that the partnership is working well.

MPS has received safety equipment and guest speakers/trainers, and J.E. Johnson now has a local training facility.

MPS students who meet the training requirements may join the J.E. Johnson advanced training group following graduation.

This allows the company to use the welding lab space after regularly scheduled school hours.

The program includes hands-on welding, pipefitting and safety training.

Based on successful testing upon completion of the course, J.E. Johnson’s ASME Section 9 welding certification will be issued to each graduate. Graduates will then receive additional training on the job through the company’s mentoring program.

“We estimate there will be 200 to 300 openings annually for skilled welders in our region for the next three to five years. This demand will create more new positions for welders than for any other technical positions in our area,” said Bill Moneypenny, CEO of MITECH+, during a recent meeting.
